How to Make an Herbal Remedy for Demineralization

How to Make an Herbal Remedy for Demineralization

Demineralization is the body's deprivation of important minerals and mineral salts and leads to softening of the teeth and bones. Excessive demineralization can lead to early onset of osteoporosis and tooth decay. Most people, to some degree, lack the proper vitamins and minerals needed to maintain healthy bones and teeth, but through proper nutrition and herbal remedies, osteoporosis and tooth decay can be postponed or even prevented.

1

Include a variety of fresh raw fruits and vegetables in your daily diet to insure that your body receives all the vitamins and minerals it needs. Many people forget that water, fruits and vegetables are important parts of herbal and natural medicine. Better than anything you can buy in a bottle, a healthy diet will prevent many ailments, including demineralization.

2

Drink alfalfa juice daily to boost all the minerals needed to prevent demineralization. A powerful herbal remedy, alfalfa is not just for animals anymore. You can find alfalfa in pill or liquid extract form, but the best and most nutritious manner is to simply grow some fresh alfalfa in your back yard and harvest every morning for a blender full of fresh juice. You may add carrot juice, orange juice or honey to sweeten this powerfully healthy herbal remedy.

3

Increase your intake of silica, which creates elasticity in all of the body's tissue, and is the first mineral to be lost in demineralization. The best sources of silica are water, fruits and vegetables, three important ingredients in any herbal remedy. Silica is also concentrated in the skins of many cereals, so increasing your intake of bran or oatmeal and adding a bit of fruit is a great way to supplement silica.

4

Eat lots of calcium rich foods. Studies show the calcium absorption rate of foods is over 50 percent, only 32 oercent in milk and dairy products, and even less in calcium supplements. The best way to get more calcium in your diet is through the foods you eat. The Earth's best natural herbal remedies for calcium include alfalfa, brussel sprouts, broccoli, figs, kale and beans.

5

Take Omega 3-6-9 fish oil supplements and add more fish to your diet to increase the amount of Vitamin D in your body. Also, by allowing yourself plenty exposure to the sun you help your body create Vitamin D, an important mineral lost in demineralization.

Tips & Warnings

Reduce your intake of antacids. Phosphorus is a mineral readily available in fruits and vegetables, however over-use of antacids can rob your body of the phosphorus it needs, causing demineralization and kidney problems.

How to Make an Herbal Pillow

How to Make an Herbal Pillow

The herbal pillow boasts a history that reaches as far back as the ancient Egyptians. Scented linen herbal pillows helped many a Pharaoh get some

Things You'll Need:

Linen or muslin fabric

Sewing machine or needle and thread

Place the right sides of the fabric pillow facing each other. Sew them together along three sides, leaving the fourth open for stuffing. Turn the sewn fabric the right side out and press with an iron.

3

Place your choice of herbs in a bowl and add your fixative. Place the herbs in the pillow along with the cotton balls. Here are a few herbs you can use:
*Restful herbs
Chamomile, hops,

Leave your pillow in an air-proof bag for at least a day before you use it. This allows the scent to strengthen and enhances its therapeutic effects.

5

At bedtime or naptime, tuck your herbal pillow inside your regular pillowcase, or just lay it beside you.

Tips & Warnings

A fixative will help your dried herbs retain their fragrance much longer. Fixatives include: musk, ambergris and civet.

Your cotton balls help add soft fullness to your herbal pillow

Many of the herbs that are used in making potpourri can be used to make your herbal pillow.

Make a pillowcase for your finished herbal pillow from luxurious fabric.

Make a quick herbal pillow by placing half a cup of herbs in a 3/5-inch drawstring bag. Draw it closed and tie the strings.

How to Make an Herbal Lip Balm

How to Make an Herbal Lip Balm

Herbal oils are the base ingredient for lip balms. They're easy to make, but plan ahead because they take a little time to "brew." Once you have your herbal oil prepared, it's simple to mix it with beeswax to make a great consistency lip balm or skin salve. Your finished lip balm makes an excellent gift and is good for any skin problems that require moisturizing and healing.

Things You'll Need:

1 quart clean, dry glass jar with tight-fitting lid

<br>1 cup fresh or dried herb(s) such as comfrey, plantain, noni fruit or echinacea root (or a combination of herbs)

<br>32 oz. almond or grapeseed oil

<br>Strainer

<br>Cheescloth or old panty hose

<br>1/4 cup beeswax

<br>Glass measuring cup

<br>2 medium pots

<br>Spoon

<br>Lip balm tubs

Making an herbal oil

1

If you’re using fresh herbs, rinse and then dry them thoroughly. Slice them up or crush them and place them in a clean glass jar, such as a canning jar with a securely-fitting lid. If you're using dried herbs, fill your jar about 1/3 full.

2

Fill your jar with the oil and cover tightly.

3

Place the jar in a sunny spot for about 10 days. A faster method is to bake it very slowly in your oven at 150 degrees for about 3 hours, or simply put it in your closed car that is parked in the sun for a full day.

4

Strain your mixture when done and compost the herbs that were in it.

5

Add about 1 tsp. vitamin E oil (available at pharmacies). This acts as a natural preservative and also aids in healing the skin.

Making lip balm

1

Heat 1 3/4 cups of your herbal oil in a 2-cup glass measuring cup placed in a double boiler.

2

In a separate double boiler, heat about Вј cup of beeswax. When both the oil and the beeswax are hot, pour the beeswax into the oil.

3

Be sure to do the “freezer test." After combining the oil and wax, dip a spoon into the mixture and then put it in your freezer for just one minute. This will quickly solidify the blend and will show you the finished consistency. If you want it creamier, add more oil. If you want it more firm, add more wax.

4

When you reach the desired consistency, transfer your salve into smaller containers for ease of use and gift giving.

Tips & Warnings

In general, it is preferable to use fresh herbs. But if you have only dried plants, use good quality dried herbs that haven't been sitting in your pantry for too long. If you use a fresh herb from your garden or from the grocery store, make certain that it has not been sprayed with any pesticides or herbicides.

Working with hot oil and beeswax can present some minor danger of burns. If you are working with
children
, be sure to supervise the process closely.

How to Make an Herbal Honey for Food and Medicine

How to Make an Herbal Honey for Food and Medicine

As an herbalist, I like to find creative ways to add herbs to my life. One of my favorites is to make herbal honey. Not only are my remedies tasty, but the honey add extra health benefits.

Your best bet is to purchase raw honey. When honey is pasteurized, the good things in honey, such as the live enzymes, become damaged or killed off. Heat destroys certain vitamins and enzymes. Part of the benefit of consuming honey is that all of these good things remain intact.

Honey is very soothing on the throat and respiratory system, making it a logical choice when used as a sore throat remedy or as a cough syrup base. It is also an antibacterial and has a good amount of B vitamins. Using it in small amounts each day can boost the immune system and help your overall state of health. When mixed with herbs, the benefits of honey or amplified.

Here are some of my favorite herbs to use in herbal honeys:

* Fresh Ginger root
* Peppermint
* Cinnamon
* Garlic
* Cayenne Pepper
* Rose
* Thyme
* Oregano
* Chamomile
* Spearmint
* Sage

You can use my list to start, or you can experiment with your favorite herbs. Keep in mind that the more flavorful the herb is, the better it will taste when mixed with honey.

Also, remember that dried herbs are best. Ginger root and garlic cloves are the exception to this. If the herb has a lot of moisture, it will go bad quicker.

Things You'll Need:

Small mason jar, sterilized

Raw honey--enough to fill the jar

Herb of choice

Chopstick

1

Choose an herb to use for your herbal honey. You can base it completely on flavor, or you can choose one that will help with a health problem. For example, if you have a sore throat, you can use sage. If you have a cold, you can choose ginger or cinnamon. Consult the link at the bottom of this article to help you chose an herb for medicinal purposes.

2

Fill the mason jar halfway with the herb you choose. If you decide to use cinnamon, use cinnamon sticks instead of the powdered spice. You may need to break the sticks apart.

3

Pour honey over the herb until the herb is covered and the honey rises to the top. To release any air bubbles that may form, poke them with a chopstick. Do this until they are all gone. The air bubbles may make it go bad faster.

4

Cover the jar and store in the refrigerator. Let it stand for a few days, and use as soon as possible. It will last one to two weeks or more. Just keep watching it to make sure that no mold forms. If you use it up quickly you can fill the jar with more honey.

Tips & Warnings

You can find raw honey at your health food store or natural grocer. Or, you can order it online.

If you can't find raw honey, feel free to find any honey you can find.

Use the honey in cooking, to sweeten teas, mixed into hot water and by itself. Be creative!

Don't feed infants two-years-old or under honey because it contains a small amount of botulism and infants don't have the immunity to withstand it.

How to Make an Herbal Healing Bath

How to Make an Herbal Healing Bath

Deep in the jungles of Central America, descendants of the Maya Indians still live and practice their herbal and spiritual healing. The Mayans have many remedies for physical ailments, but they also treat ailments of the spirit—things that we might call psychological problems—such as grief, sadness, fright and envy. These illnesses can manifest themselves as physical symptoms, which can interfere with a person’s ability to heal. This makes sense as modern Western medicine finds links between physical ailments like high blood pressure, heart disease and cancer with unresolved emotional stress and distress. This is from the teachings of Dr. Rosita Arvigo:

Things You'll Need:

3 different types of plants

<br>String, twine or plant material such as lemongrass

<br>Clippers

<br>Bathtub, swimming pool or hot tub

1

Pick 3 sprigs of 3 different plants, each about 9 inches long. Any plants are fine: common plants used include
basil
, marigold and rue. Dr. Arvigo teaches to use plants that "resonate" with the person being treated. As you cut each plant, say a short prayer, which can be something like this: “We praise you, we bless you, we thank you, we ask for your permission and your help in our healing.”

2

Tie the cut plants into 3 identical bundles with string, twine or a stringy plant material such as lemongrass.

3

Get into a bathtub, swimming pool, hot tub or the ocean.

4

Recite a short prayer such as this: "I am the one who prays to the 9 Maya spirits to help sick people. I ask the spirits to help me. I believe in them and I have faith in their great power to help and to heal. I will say my prayers 9 times to honor all of the Maya spirits."

5

Take the first of the 3 herb bundles and place it on the person’s right wrist, at their pulse below the thumb.

6

Repeat a short prayer or chant 3 times. This can be any prayer or words that you feel comfortable with. Here is an example: "With this water, I wash away all illness and begin to live wholly again. I have faith with all my heart that this bath and these prayers will relieve me completely."

7

Hold the second herb bundle on the person’s left wrist and repeat the same prayer 3 times.

8

Hold the third herb bundle on the person’s “third eye,” in the center of their forehead, and repeat the prayer 3 more times.

9

Close the ritual by repeating the “I am the one who prays to the 9 Maya spirits” prayer.

Tips & Warnings

To be truly effective, you should repeat the bath every 3 days, at least 3 times, even if you or the person you are treating feels wonderful after the first bath.
